Newsom must sign bill
Regarding “In New York, Newsom tries ‘filling the void’ left by Trump on climate leadership,” (SFChronicle.com, Politics, Sept. 24): Your story highlights Gov. Gavin Newsom’s correct belief that California must be a global leader on climate policy.
However, true leadership requires more than international agreements; it demands concrete action to protect Californians from the financial devastation of a crisis created by others.
The Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act (SB684/AB1243) is that necessary action. This bill is critical because the effects of climate change are already creating a massive, growing tax on everyday Californians. When historic wildfires cause an estimated $250 billion in damage, taxpayers are left to foot the bill through rising insurance rates, utility costs and strained public services.
The Superfund Act would reverse this by making the largest fossil fuel corporations, which knowingly profited while causing the crisis, pay their fair share.
The governor claims California is the “tent pole in terms of climate policy.” Gov. Newsom msut prove his leadership by supporting the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, and we should call our representatives to voice our support before it ever reaches his desk.
