Montezuma LLC Carbon Capture Project- Zoom presentation by Dr. Bonnie Hamilton
July 21, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join us on Sunday, July 21 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm for a presentation by Dr. Bonnie Hamilton on the Montezuma LLC Carbon Capture Project. The project intends to “capture” CO2 from fossil fuel facilities in Contra Costa and Solano counties, then transport it via barge and pipeline, large portions of which would be under the Carquinez Strait, and inject it near the recently restored Montezuma Wetlands in east Solano County.
Dr. Hamilton will update us on why the transport of CO2—not only the collection and storage—is raising concerns, and provide a brief update on the project status.
The Montezuma NorCal CarbonHub plans to collect and sequester one million tons per year of CO2 from multiple power plants and refineries within 45 miles of Montezuma’s dumping site; transport the CO2 by barge and/or underwater pipeline to Montezuma’s existing offloading dock on the Sacramento River, and then by on-site pipeline to the proposed injection site. The company also plans to “re-use” existing natural gas pipelines, a process that is not sufficiently regulated.
Carbon capture and storage (CCUS) is problematic in and of itself, but coupled with the safety problems and potential for environmental damage inherent in transporting CO2 across distances, this could be a disaster in the making—especially to our vulnerable wetlands and local communities.
We hope to see you there! Join us HERE on Zoom for this interesting and sobering presentation and discussion.
