SF Supervisor Awards

October 7, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

You’re invited to join 350SF in awarding the title of Climate Champion to three outstanding San Franciscans Supervisors in appreciation of their work with the Climate/Environmental Justice community.

WHEN Friday, Oct 7th, 1:30 – 2:30 pm

WHERE City Hall steps, facing Civic Center Plaza

This year the laurels go to Supervisors Rafael Mandelman, Gordon Mar, and Myrna Melgar

With this recognition, we let them know we remember their contributions and we can’t wait to work with them in the future to fund and implement the Climate Action Plan.

These Supervisors have introduced and supported legislation, resolutions, and have held hearings on many issues related to climate and environmental justice. They have pushed for support of the Department of the Environment (SFE) and the implementation and funding of our Climate Action Plan.

Supervisor Mandelman authored the city’s Climate Emergency Declaration in 2019, and since then he has been there pushing to make the city’s Climate Action Plan happen. In 2021 he authored the All-electric New Construction Ordinance so we can stop using explosive methane and instead power our homes and appliances with clean electricity. He worked with a coalition of groups on the Climate Equity Hub. When the Climate Action Plan funding was left out of the Mayor’s budget, he was a strong partner helping to get funds back.

Supervisor Mar co-sponsored the 2019 Climate Emergency Declaration and the 2021 All-Electric New Construction Ordinance. His office worked over the last year and continues to work on supporting and funding implementation the Climate Action Plan. He has focused strongly on existing buildings, commissioning a 2021 report from the Budget & Legislative Analyst on decarbonizing residential buildings, and worked with community organizations on the design of a Climate Equity Hub to facilitate that work. When the Mayor left Climate Action Plan funding out of her budget, Supervisor Mar successfully led the way for the Supervisors to add back the funds for the Department of the Environment.

Supervisor Melgar authored and pushed for the Ban on Gas-Powered Landscaping Equipment. She constructed it carefully. She kept her eye on equity and built the ban in consultation with landscapers, owners, equipment vendors and independent contractors and their workers.  Success crowned this effort – her ordinance just passed the full Board of Supervisors. She has also held hearings each year to bring attention to the slow progress of City fleet electrification and accelerate it.
