SUMMARY:Rally and Press Event for Clean Air Rules!
DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area Air District’s Rule 9-6 is a vital step toward phasing out gas-powered water heaters\, one of the largest sources of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the Bay Area. These greenhouse gas emissions are also estimated to cause about 85 premature deaths and 15\,000 asthma attacks each year.  \nRule 9-6 requires that when an old water heater needs replacement\, the new equipment must be an electric heat pump water heater.  These appliances have no NOx emissions and use electricity very efficiently.  The Air District and environmentalists agree that the rule needs a few amendments to avoid unintended harms to vulnerable communities\, such as exemptions for homeowners who can’t pay the upfront cost of a heat pump\, and for situations where installing a heat pump is unworkable.  \nFossil fuel companies are attempting to derail the legislation to protect their profits.  They are using the amendment process to try and make the Air District weaken or repeal the rule. \nWe must show the Air District that we support Rule 9-6 with the exemptions.  There will be a rally and press event on Tuesday\, Sept 8 at 11am\, to draw attention to the resources available–whether rebates for low income households\, free equipment and installation\, or help and technical advice– to help our residents with the transition to all-electric homes. We welcome you to join us. \nEvent: Bay Area Leaders\, Utilities\, and Communities share regional resources to support electrification. \nLocation: Chan Kajaal Park (3100 17th St\, SF)
