Earlier this year Trump’s EPA rolled back rising fuel efficiency standards previously adopted adopted under Obama, opting to freeze the standards at 2021 levels. In a direct swipe at California ( and the 13 states that follow California’s standards) they also revoked California’s authority ( the waiver) to set auto mileage standards stricter than federal regulators California is fighting in federal court against loss of the waiver, in conjunction with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)..
Meanwhile, California’s Air Resources Board negotiated with four of the largest companies – Ford, Honda, VW and BMW to adopt standards close to the rolled back Obama standards. In response, Trump’s DOJ opened an antitrust investigation into the deal.
In October, Toyota, GM,. Fiat Chrysler and and the trade Association of Global Automakers sided with Trump, opting to intervene in the lawsuit filed by the EDF.
The rollback and loss of our waiver – which covers nearly half the vehicles in the US, is a major blow to our health now by keeping transportation pollution high, and to the fight against climate change.
Why Toyota? Toyota is a good target for action, as a major car company with and eco-friendly reputation, that might be persuaded (shamed) into changing it’s stance. It’s San Francisco Toyota Region headquarters are here in San Ramon. It will be featured prominently in the upcoming San Francisco International Auto Show , sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle.
