Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice California Press Conference

August 8 @ 11:00 am - 11:45 pm

August 8th: As California Wildfires Blaze, Organizers of Climate March to Hold Press Conference in San Francisco

Leaders behind the “Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice” mobilization on Sept. 8th will speak to climate impacts and more, one month ahead of the event

WHAT: As wildfires continue devastating California, communities in the Bay Area are holding a press conference one month ahead of the Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice Mobilization on September 8th. The mobilization, expected to be the largest climate march ever on the west coast, will take place just days before Gov. Jerry Brown hosts the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco. The Aug. 8th press conference will feature organizers behind the Rise march and community leaders facing impacts from climate change and fossil fuel extraction. A street mural capturing themes of the mobilization will be drawn by artists in real-time during the press conference, as an example of the largest street mural ever planned for the day of the march.

The September mobilization in San Francisco is part of an international day of action, with hundreds of events planned around the world. These events will demand urgent action to address climate change, and to reshape an economy that supports workers, people of color, and all communities facing climate impacts. In California, groups are urging Gov. Brown and those attending his summit to commit to phasing out fossil fuel extraction and begin a just transition to 100% renewable energy that centers racial and economic justice.

WHO: More than 140 organizations have endorsed the Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice march. Speakers will include: Miya Yoshitani, Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN); Rudy Gonzalez, Acting Executive Director of the San Francisco Labor Council; Rev. Ambrose Carroll from The Church by the Side of the Road; Alondra Aragon, a youth member of PODER; and Racquel Guevara-Bolanos, a survivor of the northern California wildfires and member of North Bay Organizing Project. Additional speakers to be confirmed.

WHERE: Harry Bridges Plaza, across the street from the Ferry Building.

WHEN: Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. PT.

VISUALS: In addition to the street mural, signs and banners from organizations supporting the Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice Mobilization will be on display.
