Rally to Get Coal out of Richmond—Pack the Planning Commission Hearing

Thursday, July 18 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Come support Richmond residents suffering from health problems aggravated by coal and petroleum coke dust at a key rally before the City of Richmond Planning Commission considers the Richmond Coal Ordinance.

Hear Supervisor John Gioia, indigenous leader Courtney Cummings, Reverend Dr. Dale Weatherspoon of Easter Hill United Methodist Church, City Council member Eduardo Martinez, youth advocate and businessman Diego Garcia, activist filmmaker Brenda “BK” Williams, WCCUSD Trustee Val Cuevas, and health professional Dr. Cynthia Carmichael share their perspectives about this public health threat.

If you live in Richmond and want to speak at the Planning Commission hearing (starting at 6:30 after the rally), this is your chance to voice your experience, or that of family members, of suffering health problems such as asthma and COPD (emphysema). Please contact action@sunflower-alliance.org and put “Planning Commission testimony” in the subject line. If you live outside Richmond, come to support Richmond residents.  We are expecting big turnout from the opposition (the usual fossil fuel players and their labor allies) so your presence is important.

No Coal in Richmond has collected more than 1,600 signatures on a letter to the City Council urging them to act to end coal and petroleum coke handling and storage at the Levin-Richmond Terminal. We already suffer from the area’s highest levels of asthma and other health problems caused by bad air quality. The Richmond City Council is on record as opposing coal operations in the city.  No jobs have to be lost:  Levin can simply handle cleaner commodities than coal.

To read the ordinance and learn more about the health effects of coal and petroleum coke dust, please visit the No Coal in Richmond website.
