Oakland Climate Emergency Strategy meeting

Oakland Climate Emergency Strategy Meeting
Oakland declared a Climate Emergency last year. What can Oakland do? How can we push to make it happen?
While this is a victory, the city has not yet committed to even basic steps such as banning development of all new fossil fuel projects, and it is not really clear what Oakland’s path to decarbonization and creating a clean energy-based, just economy will look like going forward. So we would like to invite everyone who is interested in taking action to address climate change in Oakland to come to our first meeting of the 350 East Bay Oakland Hub March 23 to strategize and plan for action.
Here are some possible ideas we will discuss at the meeting:
- Passing a city-wide or a county-wide Fossil Free resolution(s) banning development of all new fossil fuel projects, similar to the recent Fossil Free resolutions that have been adopted by several counties in the Pacific Northwest;
- Any work that needs to be done to ensure the formation of a strong, truly representative Oakland Climate Action Community Advisory Committee that will push for climate action that supports the goals and timeliness of the Green New Deal;
- Envisioning what a Green New Deal would look like in Oakland
- In The Green Collar Economy, Van Jones says a Green New Deal is not just about addressing climate change but is about addressing the twin crises of radical socioeconomic inequality and rampant environmental destruction. Green New Deal activism presents the opportunity of a “marriage” between social justice activists, labor, and environmental activists, and we will need to work with other groups and communities if we are to truly understand the changes that we need to make to our system and the opportunities we need to capture to ensure a Green New Deal that works for all.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 1pm at 850 42nd Ave, Suite 2D in Oakland. Sorry, but it’s not very close to public transportation, so give Jack a call at 510-436-7682 if you need a ride.
Please RSVP here if you can make it
Please contact Ben (email@example.com) or Lyla (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have any questions.
We hope to see you soon!
