Get Trained to Canvass for No Coal in Richmond
January 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A crucial part of the campaign to shut down the Levin-Richmond coal terminal is reaching out to coal dust-impacted Richmond residents. Going door-to-door is one of the best ways to get the word out, particularly in the affected neighborhoods. Many volunteers are needed! You’ll talk about the impacts of coal and obtain signatures on a petition to city officials. This petition encourages them to support the ordinance (currently in draft form) that would phase out coal exports from Richmond.
No Coal in Richmond will be holding a training session to increase your comfort with canvassing and staffing tables at events. The training will include distribution of a script with talking points and a chance to practice with other people. You’ll leave the training with a flyer to give residents, the petition for signatures, a copy of the proposed ordinance, and addresses to canvass. You can even arrange for a partner to walk with.
Petition signatures will be used to show the city council that their constituents want to end coal shipments from Richmond. These signatures will also enable No Coal in Richmond to contact supporters to show up at council hearings on the ordinance and to a demonstration before the vote.
