350 Sonoma: Things to Do, People to See 6/26/21

 Happy Summer Laura!

Come to a Solar Open House June 26: The Hottest Party on the Block!

Sorry for the cross-posting Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and Cotati neighbors; here’s a reminder to RSVP for an open house showcasing a newly-installed solar and storage system. Representatives from Earthwise, the system installer,  and LG, the battery manufacturer, will explain how the system saves money, helps stabilize the grid, and provides electricity seamlessly during power outages. Join Laura Neish, 350 Bay Area Executive Director, any time from 1 to 3 in her front yard on Saturday June 26. Bonus information available about how these small local renewable energy projects can provide a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient grid – and the work we do to push back against the efforts by utilities to shut them down. Double bonus: you can meet the 350 Bay Area staff! Nik and Nan will be joining us at this fun in-person event. RSVP here for the address.

Plastic Free July (and Every Other Month Too!) Cut These Top 4 Single-Use Plastics! If you don’t know where to even begin when embarking on a month without plastic, start by cutting what the Plastic Free July website refers to as the “top four” single-use plastic items: Plastic bags, Water bottles, Takeaway coffee cups, Plastic straws. You’ll eliminate a great deal of plastic from your life when you refuse these four ubiquitous plastics.  Click here for more info and ideas. Reducing production is the best solution to plastic pollution, the true source of the problem.  We need regulation of industry and individual actions changing the single use culture and affecting change at the top.

Stop the Expansion of Fossil Fuels! Save July 12 at 2:30

Our fabulous colleagues at Con-Gas are asking us to save Monday, July 12, at 2:30pm to show up and promote the idea of new gas station prohibitions, which is on the calendar of the Regional Climate Protection Authority (RCPA). More details to follow, but we need as many community members as possible to attend – virtually or in person – to show overwhelming support in Sonoma County for ending new gas station permits. The meeting starts at 2:30, and details about timing of this agenda item will be shared as the date gets closer. The agenda will be posted here some time in early July.

State Quick Action: Ask Assemblymembers to support cleaner cement and SB 596

California state leaders are considering a critical bill — SB 596 — that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the cement industry. Cement manufacturing is California’s second largest industrial source of climate-busting carbon pollution. Not to mention the additional threats to our air, soil, and waterways from toxic pollution. Tell your state assembly member to support SB 596 to help reduce pollution from the cement industry, fight climate change, and protect communities by signing this petition, and/or calling or emailing your Assemblymember.

Local Quick Action: Time to Act on Those Climate Emergency Resolutions
All nine cities and the county Board of Supervisors in Sonoma County have acknowledged the global climate emergency by unanimously passing Climate Emergency Resolutions. Six of those jurisdictions (Cloverdale, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Sonoma, and Windsor) have set a target date of 2030 for carbon neutrality. Likewise, the Board of the County’s Regional Climate Protection Authority (RCPA) has approved a Climate Mobilization Strategy that sets a target date of 2030 for carbon neutrality. As a grassroots community-based organization, the Sonoma County Climate Mobilization (SCCM) helped catalyze that effort. Now they are gearing up for the NEXT BIG STEP — translating words into action! SCCM is committed to holding our electeds accountable to the goal of carbon neutrality (and more!) by 2030. We have many dedicated policymakers that understand the need for bold, transformative climate policies, but don’t yet see the groundswell of public support that’s needed to prioritize them. The Groundswell Sign-on Letter will show them overwhelming public support for bold, transformative climate actions and policies. Show your support by signing the Groundswell Sign-on Letter !!!
