Legislative Committee – Important Update Meeting

July 9 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Hi folks – we are returning to our regularly scheduled second Sunday of the month meeting of the 350 Bay Area Legislative Committee. We’ll meet from 3-5pm. The location will be the Sierra Club Bay Chapter office, 2530 San Pablo Ave. cross street Dwight, in Berkeley. AC buses stop near the building, and there is a parking lot in the back that can be used on weekends.

This is an IMPORTANT meeting. We’re be setting up lobbying activities for the 2 big climate bills of the year:
  1. SB 100 puts California on track to get its electrical energy from 100% green renewable sources by 2045. It is one of the most ambitious targets in the world and, given California’s size and importance as a climate leader, it has implications far beyond our borders. It passed the Senate easily but now faces a harder time in the Assembly. We’re joining with many other climate and environmental groups to get this bill passed.
  2. SB 775 deals with the complex and controversial issue of California’s troubled Cap and Trade program. SB 775 creates a whole new program for pricing carbon, one which corrects many of the problems with the current program and promises to do much more to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The fossil fuel industry is pulling out all the stops to kill SB 775 and unfortunately Governor Brown seems to be working with them. For both bills we’ll be setting up meetings with legislators, planning trips to Sacramento to support the bills at key committee hearings, creating social media campaigns and preparing blasts to our lists of activists.
