Clean energy is essential for California to reach our climate goals.
California needs a renewable, reliable, safe, and affordable electricity supply as rapidly as possible. This is crucial for our equity goals to protect fence line communities from the pollution of natural gas generation, nuclear generation, and the refineries which supply gasoline.
Getting to a 100% renewable grid will take massive increases in wind and solar generation and battery deployment. We also need to accelerate energy efficiency and flexible use of energy, known as demand response, which will also support the increased demand from meeting our transportation electrification and building electrification goals.
350 Bay Area is working to accelerate this transformation of California’s electricity system. This will be possible if we optimize use of energy efficiency, demand flexibility, residential (“rooftop solar”) and community solar and batteries on the local distribution grid (known as Distributed Energy Resources DER). Support the grid of the future by taking action together with 350 Bay Area, or individually by electrifying your vehicle, making your home heating and cooling more efficient (electric space heat pumps, heat pump water heaters), and going solar (especially with batteries)!
We played an integral role in helping to pass the Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act (SB 350) in the state legislature in 2015, which supported Community Choice Energy program start-ups. The Act also established clean energy, clean air, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, including reducing GHG to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. At this time 350 Bay Area stepped up to become a legal “party” at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to advocate for continuation of a strong state-wide net-metering policy that incentivizes rooftop solar. To achieve this, we helped deliver 130,000 petitions from around the state in support of net metering, the most letters ever received by the CPUC on a single issue.
